Brookfield's Renewable Strategy: Building Platforms Through Capital Recycling

CASE STUDY

In isolation, these announcements appear as transactions. Viewed together, they provide a deeper insight into Brookfield’s renewable strategy.

On July 16, 2026, Brookfield entered advanced talks to divest a 550 MW operating C&I renewable portfolio in Bikaner, Rajasthan, for ~₹3,000 Cr (~$315 Mn)

Fourteen days later, on July 30, 2026, Brookfield launched Lumara, a ~$600 Mn development platform through its Catalytic Transition Fund, anchored by an initial pipeline exceeding 6 GW of solar, wind and BESS.

The important observation is what may actually be happening.

Once a portfolio is fully commissioned, contracted under long-term PPAs, and generating predictable cash flows, it has done its job on a developer’s balance sheet. Recycling that capital into earlier-stage, higher-return development work may be a better use of it than continuing to hold a de-risked, lower-growth asset.

What we see repeatedly at Encito Advisors is that this isn’t a one-off. It’s a nine-year pattern.

The table below is not a list of separate investments. It shows how Brookfield’s renewable strategy has evolved over time.

Capital Recycling

Brookfield enters. Builds platforms with a local partner rather than chasing single projects. Operates at scale. Brings in institutional capital once the platform proves itself. Monetizes the mature portion of the portfolio. Reinvests into the next platform.

ABC Renewables & Evren reflect Brookfield’s platform-building strategy over several years.

The Bikaner portfolio sale and the launch of Lumara suggest the same approach is continuing.

Brookfield now holds ~45 GW of solar and wind assets operational or under development across its India platforms. A developer working project by project could not sustain that pace. A platform, with its own dedicated fund, can.

“India’s renewable market has crossed a threshold. Operating assets are now liquid enough to trade, and capital recycled from one deal is already funding the next; within the same month.”

— Prashant Maniar | Founder & Managing Partner

What does this signal for India’s renewable market?

The bigger story is not the sale of one portfolio or the launch of one platform. It is the emergence of a renewable market where operating assets provide the financial foundation for the next wave of development. New platforms can then deploy that capital not only into new renewable capacity, but also into solving broader market challenges such as PPA delays, grid connectivity and land acquisition timelines.

As this pattern continues, India’s renewable infra sector has shifted from project-by-project development to platform-led capital allocation, creating deeper opportunities for developers, strategic investors and infrastructure funds alike.
